Biden watching Derek Chauvin trial ‘closely’, Psaki says
Donald Trump has launched an official website to showcase his time in office, including a glowing 850-word synopsis of his four-year presidency but making no mention of the scandals, corruption investigations, two impeachments or the attacks on democratic institutions that framed his presidency.
The 45office.com website’s home page displays multiple pictures of Trump with various figures including his wife Melania, members of the military and world leaders, which were taken at multiple events during his time as president. “The Office of Donald J Trump is committed to preserving the magnificent legacy of the Trump Administration, while at the same time advancing the America First agenda,” the message on website’s home page read.
Meanwhile, Joe Biden’s Covid response senior adviser Andy Slavitt has said that US governor’s lifting mask mandates “know they’re not helping,” amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking to CNN on Tuesday morning, the adviser claimed: “I think the governor’s know better. I think the governor’s know that they are not helping the cause.”
Mr Slavitt added: “To me, a mask seems like a very small price to pay for saving people’s lives.”
The adviser made the comments to CNN after Alabama governor Kay Ivey confirmed that the state will move to rescind its face mask ban.
Good morning and welcome to The Independent’s rolling coverage of the Joe Biden administration and US politics.

US eyes additional UN action on North Korea after missile tests
The Biden administration has said it is considering “additional actions” that the United Nations might take to respond to North Korea‘s recent missile tests.
Linda Thomas-Greenfield, US Ambassador to the United Nations, was not specific about what those actions might entail, but noted that the UN Security Council had met last week and renewed the mandate of experts who monitor sanctions against the North.
The council is also expected to hold closed-door discussions on North Korea on Tuesday. “We’re looking at additional actions that we might take,” Ms Thomas-Greenfield said of the US and others Security Council members.
Joe Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan will be meeting in Washington soon with his counterparts from Japan and South Korea to discuss North Korea strategy as the administration finalises a review of how to approach the country.
Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, who recently returned from Tokyo and Seoul, said the three countries are united in dealing with the challenges posed by Pyongyang.
“What we’re seeing from Pyongyang in terms of these provocations does nothing to shake the resolve of our three countries along with allies and partners around the world to approach North Korea from a position of strength in order to diminish the threat that it poses to the region and beyond,” Mr Blinken said.
On Monday, North Korea accused the UN of a “double standard” over its reaction to the launches, which violate UN sanctions, warning of serious consequences.
Last week, North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea in a defiance of UN resolutions that ban such launches by North Korea. Some experts say North Korea‘s missile launches, the first of their kind in a year, were aimed at applying pressure on the Biden administration.

Biden warns of virus rebound if nation lets up
Joe Biden and a top health official have warned that too many Americans are declaring virus victory too quickly, appealing for mask requirements and other restrictions to be maintained or restored to stave off a “fourth surge” of Covid. The head of the CDC said she had a feeling of “impending doom” if people keep easing off.
“This is deadly serious,” Mr Biden said, urging governors to reinstate mask mandates and other restrictions that some states have been easing.
Hours earlier, during a virtual White House health briefing, Dr Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reflected on her experience treating Covid patients who are alone at the end of their lives.
“We have so much to look forward to, so much promise and potential of where we are and so much reason for hope,” she said. “But right now, I’m scared.”

Biden makes area of ocean between New York and New Jersey an offshore wind zone
The Biden administration is ramping up efforts to increase offshore wind energy along the US East Coast, announcing progress on a huge wind farm planned off the New Jersey coast and setting a goal to generate enough power to provide electricity for more than 10 million homes by 2030.
Meeting the target could create jobs for more than 44,000 workers and employ nearly 33,000 others related to offshore wind activity, the White House said on Monday.
The plan would also help avoid 78 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Pence lays groundwork for 2024 run
Mike Pence, the former vice president, is steadily reentering public life as he eyes a potential run for the White House in 2024.
He’s joining conservative organisations, writing op-eds, delivering speeches and launching an advocacy group that will focus on promoting the Trump administration’s accomplishments.
To prevail in a Republican presidential primary, Mr Pence may have to reinforce his loyalty to Mr Trump while defending his decisions during the final days of the administration when the president falsely alleged widespread voter fraud, contributing to a deadly riot at the US Capitol.
